Roving Caricaturist

Studio caricaturist which work in studio or art workshop or gallery, it totally different from an event caricaturist. Because in the studio, the caricaturist only serving individual customer in live drawing or draw from photos. They can use whatever tools like easel or table and sit in a comfortable way as they like while working on the drawing.

Event caricaturist, which work as an artist who need to entertain immediate and unpredictable crowd in the event like family day, dinner and dance, product launch and etc.

As an event caricaturist, sometime we unable to know whether the event we are doing surely having proper setting like providing table and chairs for us or not; I had experience many times that the event venue totally do not have any proper setting, it forcing us do our caricature drawing in a roving way.

Sometime you have to start to do your caricature drawing in the indicated time frame to meet the schedule of the event or it could be because you have to finished your drawing session on the dot which allow you to rush to another event booking, it made you having no choice to start your drawing in a roving way as well.

Some venue, like some pub do not have suitable table and chairs for you to set your drawing corner, or the organizer want all artists entertain the guests in a dynamic way, that also part of the reason that caused us do our caricature in a roving way. As a experienced and professional event caricaturist, you have to know how to handle such unpredictable situation, thus, you must be able to be flexible and having proper tools to handle it.

Am I right to say : A professional event caricaturist, should be able to handle any or many difference kind of situation to make the event or our program run smoothly?

Hence, can I say: "A Professional Caricaturist" is totally different from "A Professional Event Caricaturist"?

Because "A Professional Caricaturist" or a caricaturist who work in studio or gallery, never ever need to handle or facing such problem at all.

Roving Caricature Drawing

One of the common request for roving caricature drawing was during special event like Valentine day. We usually been arranged roving around the restaurant or the dining area, After the violin musician or guitarist play the music or song to the guests table, that will be our turn to entertain the guests.

Hence, as long as you are doing live caricature or portrait drawing for event, you are belonging to entertainer, you are required to serve the guests.

Sometimes,we roam around with stilt walkers, close magicians, roving balloonist at the same time, we work as group performing artists or entertainers; meanwhile we are here to create the fun atmosphere for the event, you definitely no longer made the crowd only comes to you because we are sharing the pride as group entertainers.

Roving Caricature Drawing for Event

Did roving caricature in a shopping center today. Talking about roving caricature drawing, it seems to be a trend nowadays.Thought many event organizers tried to make caricature drawing in a dynamic way, make this item as a lively fringe art as roving close up magician, roving balloonists, still walkers and so ford.Thought due to globalization reason and roving caricaturists was very common in oversea, it caused roving caricature drawing getting highly demand and popular in many Singapore's event as well.

Roving Caricature

Just completed one roving caricature job at one of the Singapore's IR and met some event entertainers down there as well.Seems roving caricature was getting higher demand in our current market now, because many of the event companies was asking for roving caricature job.

In my view, roving job could be very easy and could be very tough job, it involved many experiences to handle the crowd, especially playing the role of crowd puller, entertain the public in an open area like the main entrance area of the huge size shopping mall or conference hall; these are the things you need to take note other than maintain your basic drawing skills.

Thought in the roving job session, for example, the caricaturist not just do his/her drawing and give to the guests/public, the balloonist not just making the balloons and give out just like that.

Since we already surrounded be the crowd (especially doing for the public) while we at work, we need to know how to present our artworks in a best way to increase our entertaining level, hence, we can call our self an entertainer, which much more than just an event artist.

My dinner of the day! Hiak hiak!

Roving Caricature

Did a roving caricature drawing in a restaurant for mother’s day special, it was great that this job was running smoothly and so far so good.

Talking about roving caricature, it looks like an easy job due to you has a freedom to walk around, doesn’t mean you can cheat (because the organizer always put their eyes on you), there are many things you need to pay serious attentions.

Thought working in a very crowded place is one of the most difficult roving job, like restaurant or ballroom, there are many people walking around, you need to beware not blocking people who passing by, not blocking the waiter/waitress serving their guests; the guest being drawn by you could be move about often, the lighting of the working place and all sorts of distortion.

You need to know how to handle the above mentioned stuffs and then you will be able to proceed to draw the caricature, lots artists might not like to do such roving job.

Anyway, I think it might not that difficult to do roving caricature job, but it need experiences and patients to do so.

Roving Caricature Job

Did event yesterday night at Zouk. That was a nice place! One of my friend was caught using the roving caricature gear exactly same as Mr Kamal Dollah's gear set! Heehee!I think that was a good idea that using such gear that originally invent by Mr Kamal Dollah (if I am not guess wrongly), he is one of Singapore's famous and International Accredited top rated caricaturist. I believe you can really safe lots energy by using it. But I think for those who drive, is quiet good to carry this gear.

For my case, I do not drive, so I still prefer using my drawing board that support by my fat stomach whenever I do roving caricature! Heehee! ...and hope using my fat stomach to support my drawing board can help to burn more fat! Hiahiahia!

Just my dinner with friends!

Roving Caricaturist

One of the important factors to work as an event artist was you needs to take note about the environment. Your working space could be very big (eg. On the football field) or it could be as small as in a restaurant or ballroom that the guests was sitting on the chairs set table by tables.

As a roving caricaturist’s demanded by the organizer, I like to work in a big space, because I like to work in a comfortable space.

Roving in a restaurant, not an easy job, event I had do experienced that since 1990, in 2009’s today, I still need to pay a lots of energy to handle such job carefully during the show time.

You must know where to start, when to pause you drawing while there are someone having a speech during the event. Other than that, you also need to know when to give way for the guests or waiter/ waitress walk pass you while you are roving to draw the sitting guests.

That is a big challenge within this 5minutes to draw a person that having the distraction of the guest being drawn was moving his or her head a lot / someone just walk pass between you and the guest being drawn and so fort….and make sure you drawing still looks alike and having a great resemblance you know…haahaa!

Roving Caricaturist

I not sure whether roving caricaturist is the latest trend and demand in the market or not, but so far almost all my enquiry about my caricature service was roving job, maybe someday I should check with the caricaturists who are worked in this line that are much longer than me to see if this really the current trend.

In my experiences, if you want to work as event caricaturists, you hardly avoid doing roving job, unless you have a real big famous name that can made all the guests in the related events come to sit down on the chair right in front you and let you draw their face.

Once you asked to do roving caricature, you have to be compromised you are belonging to one of the servicing staffs in the event, how was the guests seeing you was depend on your luck; what I mean if you met a group of guest that respect you are a professional or a specialist, you sure can tell and feel it; else some will treat you as an waiter or waitress, hence, once you drawn them and give the drawing to them and they could made a bad comment about it, this is a realistic world.

At this moment, you hardly tell or show people how stunning your background an experiences are, because to such group of people you just a waiter or waitress.

(Photo taken in 1993 while I doing roving caricature in a Valentine day event at Raffles hotel if I am not wrong. I got hair during that time! Heehee!)

Roving Caricaturist

Doing caricature in a roving or mobile style is slightly difficult compared with sitting at an arranged place to draw the guests.Talking about drawing caricature in roving way, we may need to go to entertain the guests (of course sometimes the guests will automatically come to you), we need to create some entertaining atmosphere yet the drawing to be produced still need to looks alike to the guest being drawn; it need some experiences and a little bit special skills, haahaa!

Roving Caricaturist

Seems most of my caricature booking was in a roving style which holding my drawing board to the guests and draw them. I am not sure whether roving caricature drawing had been became a trend or not.Basically, roving artists were commonly requested by the event organizers; hence, as a professional entertainer, we must be able to do roving anytime upon request or based the circumstances.

The good things about doing roving, we felt more freedom to do our job and mostly emphasizes on our showmanship which need to know how we present our drawing in the events, how to create an entertaining atmosphere to the event etc.

The difficult of doing roving caricature was the guest being drawing could be moving too often, some other guests just do not care what is happening and just cross between you and your guest being drawn especially in an event with crowded guests and waiter/waitress, other than crossing by between you and the person being drawing that could be someone accidentally push your body or your hands and caused the drawing in an unexpected outcome.

Hence doing roving caricature, other then try your best to do a looks alike drawing and merge it in your drawing styles, you need to just like Jackie Chan or Jet Li in their kung fu movie which need to handle many distractions like after somebody walk across between you and your guests being drawn, you still need to take care not accidentally push by someone, not accidentally pushing someone or blocking the entrance or blocking people’s view on the projector screen etc etc. one more thing: the narrow of the working space like in a restaurant, the more difficult for us to work; you really need another level of skills to handle all this.

In children parties, if you are lucky, you can meet a lots of young guests that able to sit stills and let you them, else they could be running around and very impatient to be drawn, this could be a tough job. Haahaa!

Drawing in a very dim light places? In a dim light, you need to have a strong drawing basic skill and experiences, because the detail of the face of the guest was less due to dim lighting. I don’t think you bring a mini torch can solve the problem, it need some skills I had been mentioned just now.Drawing with roving in a very dim light places especially like a pub that having many blinking lighting effect? It is another type of tough job, much more skills and experiences and energy to be required! Heehee!
