Live Caricature for Event

I do live caricature for event since 1990, our event booking and rate was based on hourly basis, hence we should be produce as many drawing within each hour's booking.My favorite medium for my caricature job was using wax pen or we called "China Graph" which belonging to crayon material.You can see my pencil box always having so many drawing pens, this is because I usually like to produce as many drawings within every hours' booking, which I need not do any shading of my drawing pens, hence I can produce about 20-25 drawings within an hour.

There are many caricaturists in the market using marker to do the drawing; I think nothing about good or bad, it depend on the how good the and how fast the drawing to be produce within the booking hours.

I would like to say, the technique in live drawing was very different from drawing in the studio.

Lets Increase our Live Caricaturist Booking Rate for Event?

According the economy news, Singapore's economy was doing very well, that was really good news! Hopefully we getting more jobs coming in.

As an event entertainer, a caricaturist, I only know November and December is our peak booking period. After the peak period of November and December, maybe January, Caricature booking will be slowing down any will be slowly going back to the quiet period till the next school holiday period.

Thought many caricaturist was having many inquiries from many event companies and direct calling be various firms, in my personal view, and based past year's experience from 1990 till now, my conclusion as below:

Many companies was celebrating their dinner and dance during year-end, which are November and December, of course one of the pre-event (or Fringe art activity) which is Caricature service was became highly demand, it did not represent the market really have such huge demand during the future following months.

I don't have any obligation your guys can try to increase your caricature charging rate during this period. But do not forget there are more and more new caricaturists and new immigrant try their lower rate to share this cake as well.

Increase your services rate higher? It only suitable to peak period only, or unless you do it only for hobby, hence only high rate you then accept the job, or you might be someone famous and great reputation in the market, you only serve high-end clientele, meanwhile you can't take any lower rate job, it only spoiling your artistic reputation.

I believe there everyday in a year sure have celebrations and events in this First World Singapore, maybe it could be more and more?

The I don't think life drawing of caricature service only depend on certain period and also based on certain theme only.

During peak period, big volume of jobs were looking for artists to do, but during low booking seasons, that will be artist looking for job.

Try to train many caricaturists to feed the November and December (or January)'s need? Then all of us will be facing problem later. I had mentioned this in my previous posting before.

Increase caricature charging rate? I will do it during certain special day's only: XMas Eve, New Year's Eve, certain day of Chinese New Year, and some special and additional request for some special event.

Did caricature in Charcoal requested by client for a dinner and dance.This is a "Fairy and Wonderland" theme eventEveryone was dressed in nice costume and taking glamorous shoot.The string quartet added up the great atmosphere of "Fairy and Wonderland" theme event, that was really nice!

Roving Caricature Drawing for Event

Did a roving caricature for an dinner and dance in Marina Bay Sand recently and great so met some entertainers that I know.

Caricature Job

That was great to met Katherine Mah (http://www.littlecrystalpaints.com/)who doing body art in one of the event I did recently! Katherine was one of the best body art i met in the event market. That was great to seeing her and her team doing well. Obviously, their succeed was due to their right attitude, only concentrate on doing their job in a professional way, never like other artist who like to spend unnecessary time to jealous about other people or talk bad behind people. Hence, they are one of the team that like to use by many event companies.Some of my guests ;p

I had been hired by an event company to do roving caricature in Clarke Quay, the client is AutoDesk Group Users’ guests came from a conference organized by them, which came from many countries.Great to meet magician Bob Chua doing close up magic in the event!Nice bar counter decorated by ice carving!

Roving Caricaturist at Christmas Party

Did caricature at Chijmes Singapore for a Christmas Party, the drawing was mainly emphasizing to the children guests. It was an outdoor roving job. In thought today’s morning and noon’s weather was warm and expected that should be a tough job to work in such warm environment this evening, but fortunately it have a rain and stopped before the show start!I did a side view caricature! Heehee!

Birthday Party

Did a children birthday party at east coast road, The Bay shore Condo. I am not first time doing caricature for children party in my 18 years’ event artist life, not first time doing event in condo, so I would not taking too much photos, only first timer and un-experience caricaturist will taking lots photo while doing event.In this show I met balloonist and face painter, all my old friends there; that was a happy job for me.

Two hands

Am I the only ambidextrous artist in Singapore for the time being? Yup, I am the only ambidextrous caricaturist, the person who using both hands to draw in Singapore so far.
I am not the only ambidextrous who doing art in Singapore, see this guy, he is a Singaporean, I know him few years ago. He uses two hands to do his calligraphy as well!
I am not the only “Jumper”, there are someone else, hope won’t meet Samuel L.Jackson who like to kill the Jumper in the “Jumper” movie, haahaa!

Caricature for Morgan Stanley Dinner & Dance

To night completed caricature drawing for Morgan Stanley Dinner & Dance at Marriott Hotel Singapore. It was great to met many nice and gentle guests, and having lots handsome guy and beautiful girls and tai-tai (rich women)! Lot of beautiful girls take the queue to let me stare at her! Wah! Really? Haahaa! The answer is definite not! Just because I am the uncle who hired by the event company in-charge to draw the complimentary caricature for the guests!

Caricature for Dinner & Dance at Swissotel

Completed a caricature for Soxal Sport and Social Club’s Dinner & Dance 2008
It was great tom met airbrush tattoo artist Ivan and Lily in the event. They did a wire crafts art for my name and given me as a souvenir.

Caricature at Sentosa Cove, ONE’15 Marina Club

Did caricature pre-event for SUTL 40anniversarry dinner and dance at ONE’15 Marina Club at Sentosa Cove. The guests were nicely dressed in difference costume based on their own theme as they like. It was very interesting to attend such part, many nice dresses and nice costume, of course having lots beautiful girls! Haahaa! All the guests was highly motivated, playful and friendly. I guess there should be about 40 plus tables (10perseon per table) in thei dinner! Big company’s dinner and dance!Before I go to Sentosa, I passing by Vivo City, found the latest lcon and graphic design of one of the famous branded cosmetics M.A.C. It was really nice, it was the drawing style I love! The character of the girls in the drawing is similar to what I always like to hightlight in my caricature!

A1 size Caricature

Did a caricature based on the order in A1 size. I seldom draw a single person caricature in such a big size but I did drawn figure drawing in A1 or slightly bigger. Some people believed caricature drawing must done in marker pen, to me it doesn’t matter, as long as I complete the artwork which tried my best effort. My favorite media was crayon pencils, charcoal, chalk pastels. Any wet based color media was no so easy for my, unless I really have the mood to do it in a really free and long undisturbed time, but seems I hardly having such time presently. Haa haa!In United States having lots best caricaturist, US is a very big country, Singapore is a very small country compared to it, hence the market was very small, moreover, there was limited space for the development of caricature drawing. I do caricature drawing besides my hobby, for surviving as well, in my experiences, most of the client preferred looks like type, they cannot accept those drawing that pull their face in a real caricature like what we seen on the newspapers or magazines; these was the majority demands.

My competitors keep comment to their clients that my caricature was portrait instead of caricature, yet when they did the drawing for their clients; it was still in a portrait based! When there was small market, when more and more people came to join this trait, lost people will trying to talk bad behind each other, too bad! Some new comer claimed that they are the longest caricaturist in this industry, I just let them be. Because I believed everyone got their own style, they should challenge themselves instead of just to win. A real artist doing art is to make his/her art better and better in a higher level, those who doing art because just wanted to win, is a worker that just doing painting but do not understand art at all.
