Did Chinese paper cutting demo for an event at Suntec City Convention Hall last week and great to meet nice guests in the event.
Thought not much people in the market do Chinese paper cutting in the event industry so far, in my view, this is because it was an item that look very easy to do yet took real long hours to produce.
For my Chinese paper cutting demo for event, usually I will do simple cutting demo during the booking hour, and within and hour's booking, about 120pcs pre made artworks to be given away to the guests.
For such quantity of pre made artworks, required about 40 working hours to produce and need to be done in many different days due to my hand strenght.
Each cutting required about 20 minutes or more to be completed, so I unable to take any order to produced what the guest want on the spot, just imaging you hire my service for an hour and I only able to produce 2 pcs artworks on the spot for your event! No client wanted to see such thing happened.
Anyway, it was and fringe activity that suit for Chinese New Year and cultural event.
As an ambidextrous caricaturist, I do caricature drawing since 1990 in Singapore. Einstien from Norway is the pioneer caricaturist with certain years before me, then follow by Eric Ng, Saik, Poon Ee Way whose were my senior. Chong Jit Leong, which known having shop at Yishun area doing full time portrait and caricature around that time as well if not wrong. Not much people doing caricature for events fringe art during that period. Nowadays, more than 22 active caricaturists in the industry.

Illegal busking artist at Orchard Road
While the public complained the busking artistes whose playing music and the related activities had spoiling Orchard Road’s high class atmospheres and nice scene, you still can see some ‘impromptu’ or hit and run china artist doing their art in Orchard road.
I found the Chinese rainbow calligraphy was quiet unique, but after met some real professional Chinese rainbow calligrapher from China and Hong Kong; I found that currently only fewer REAL Rainbow Calligrapher in Singapore, most of them, especially who’s doing events like dinner and dance and related events was fake rainbow calligrapher. One Senior and professional calligrapher friend from China told me that one of the most popular China families who doing rainbow calligraphy can dough figurine making, was totally fake artists and seriously spoilt the great quality and graceful name of their traditional China folk art.
But what happened was currently, this China family was the most demanded artistes in the market, because they were the cheapest artist in the industry, as what I heard from one event artist, their special packet for the event booking was every 10 event bookings will be giving 1 free service.
Besides quantity, who care about the quality?
One Shanghai friend told me, he realized too many event companies in Singapore was not interested the artist’s skills level but only interested on hiring the cheapest artist for their events, Due to the globalization nowadays, more and more guests able to differentiate how good of the artist’s skills level, more and more Caucasians when to china and they know what it good artwork and what is fake art pieces.
