Chinese Paper Cutting for Chinese New Year Event

Did Chinese paper cutting demo for an event at Suntec City Convention Hall last week and great to meet nice guests in the event.
Thought not much people in the market do Chinese paper cutting in the event industry so far, in my view, this is because it was an item that look very easy to do yet took real long hours to produce.

For my Chinese paper cutting demo for event, usually I will do simple cutting demo during the booking hour, and within and hour's booking, about 120pcs pre made artworks to be given away to the guests.

For such quantity of pre made artworks, required about 40 working hours to produce and need to be done in many different days due to my hand strenght.

Each cutting required about 20 minutes or more to be completed, so I unable to take any order to produced what the guest want on the spot, just imaging you hire my service for an hour and I only able to produce 2 pcs artworks on the spot for your event! No client wanted to see such thing happened.

Anyway, it was and fringe activity that suit for Chinese New Year and cultural event.

Mid Autumn Chinese Paper Cutting

Just taken few hours to do research and spend few hours again to reproduce a Chinese paper cutting design that suits for the Mid Autumn Festival Theme.
The flower design was from clip art and the text and overall design and layout out was was by my own idea.
I spent about 4 hours to cut this 5 pieces stack of red paper artwork. The reason to stack 5 pieces paper to cut out the artwork because it able to produce 5 pieces art pieces at a time. The reason for 5pieces stacked of paper to be cut at a time is because based on normal human's hand strength, it was the reasonable thickness of the papers to be cut at a time by human hand.

Chinese Paper is a time consuming item. Hence, for fringe events activity wise, it was hard to produce on the spot like caricature drawing or silhouette cutting and etc.
I think Chinese paper cutting was one of the tough item for fringe activity, because it need really long hours to do the preparation if you demand on the quality.

Chinese Paper Cutting Preparation

As per next year's Chinese New Year is coming earlier at 22nd January Sunday as Chinese New Year Eve, there were some event companies start to inquiry some related fringe arts activities, including my Chinese paper cutting. Seems I have to work harder to prepare the time consuming Chinese paper pre-cut zodiac and related designs.Due to usually Chinese new year fall on 2nd-14th Feb, year of 2012's Chinese new year came quite early, hence there are shorter time for event companies to arrange Chinese New Year's activities, therefore many event management was asking related stuffs start from this month.

Chinese Fan Calligraphy

In a corporate event, especially having guests from many different countries, Chinese calligraphy on Chinese Fan is one of the most popular item that love by the guests.
I just met Mr Yong from Yong Gallery (http://yonggallerysart.blogspot.com/)recently, one of the famous Singapore Calligrapher doing his Chinese Calligraphy in the red color Chinese fans which provide by him. This Indian Parot fortune card picking fortune telling was very accurate! This is my first time to trythis Parot fortune card reading in my event life! Because usually all of us do not have the time to serve each other due to each entertainer in the event was start at the same timing.
That was so great that this Parot fortune card owner will read out your fortune from the card which picked by the Parot, because most of the Parot fortune card owner will let you read the card by youself. One of Malay cultural art demo: Ketupak making.and Indian's tradiional florist art.

Chinese New Year Events Preparation

Chinese New Year is coming in a extra early this year, the eve of Chinese New Year fall on 25th Jan and 26th Jan Monday is the first day of Chinese New Year, there left 23 days from the time I post this blogging.

Just like Chinese theme artists, I need to prepare lots of pre made stuffs, because the Chinese Paper Cutting involved some designs other than the traditional basic patterns. Usually the most popular cutting will be the zodiac based on the New Year; like the coming New Year was year of Ox (己丑年); other than that, the rest of the cutting was mostly about wealth and lucks. My face reading and palm reading display stuffs. My Power Suit! I will become “Power Ranger” while I wear it!! Hia hia hia!Time flies as arrow, so I have to work harder in 2009, haahaa!

May Toh’s Chinese Dough Figurine

When I tidy up my cupboard, found this little piggy dough figurine done by May Toh which is Singaporean who learn from China true dough figurine master many years ago.

This piggy doll which made by flour which was given by May in January 2007 during an event still in very good condition! (see my post in jan 2007)
I strongly recomment her dough figurine for those who looking quality artworks for your coming Chinese New Years events! May Toh’s website at http://www.talentsdata.8m.com/maytoh.htm

I would like to highlight this is because during past 2 years, I heard more and more guests (not the event companies or staffs) keep complaining about the bad quality of the flour doll which get mould and spoil fast which done by the current most active event artists from China (the parents and the daughter). Unfortunately I did not see thouse spoilt dough figurine at all, so got no comment about it. I just like to recomment some local Singaporean great artist down here.

Beside May Toh, another Singaporean who also provide quality dough figurine making, can see her works at: http://www.talentsdata.8m.com/02_003.htm
