Just went Asian Civilisations Museum today and see the Kangxi Emperor Exhibition, this is my second time went to this exhibition. I think I must see the great portrait drawing of the King Kangxi and related Manchurian king’s large size drawing, which most of them drawn and framed in about 4meter x 7meter !Most of this drawing was drawn in western style which you can see some three dimension background instead of the traditional Chinese painting style. Most of the painting was done by Giuseppe Castiglione (郎世宁). I can’t believe my eyes when the first time I seen it, because each of these portrait was spent few years to complete and the detail was unbelievable great! You really have to see by your own eyes! Yup, all of those portrait painting was original copies!
One of the artwork exhibited in this exhibition I loved very much was a gift that King Kangxi gave to his grand mother, which is a Chinese calligraphy “Heart Sutra” (般若波罗蜜多心经)written in gold pigment son paper, I found King Kangxi’s hand writing was real amazing, of course, that was the hand writing by the King!
There are many nice scenes surrounding Asian Civilisations Museum. The Fullerton Hotel just opposite. My favourite Nasi Lemak at Golden Show Hawker Centre.
As an ambidextrous caricaturist, I do caricature drawing since 1990 in Singapore. Einstien from Norway is the pioneer caricaturist with certain years before me, then follow by Eric Ng, Saik, Poon Ee Way whose were my senior. Chong Jit Leong, which known having shop at Yishun area doing full time portrait and caricature around that time as well if not wrong. Not much people doing caricature for events fringe art during that period. Nowadays, more than 22 active caricaturists in the industry.

The Kangxi Emperor Exhibition at Asian Civilisations Museum
That was real cool that have a chance to went in to “The Kangxi Emperor Exhibition” (康熙盛世.故宫珍宝) after meeting a client at Asian Civilisations Museum for some Chinese cultural related jobs.I wasn’t going in to the museum after my primary school until today! That was really long time! I didn’t know there’s a lot of very high-tech tools used to explain the exhibitions stuffs to the guests, like the touch screen TV-like tools been set standby just next to many main exhibition stuffs to allow the guests to know more about the background and the history of related exhibition stuffs.
I was really impressed, inspired and felt the great impact of few giant sizes portrait painting of the Manchu’s king’s including King Kangxi (康熙), his son King (雍正) YongZheng, and King Qian Long (乾隆).
Each portrait was about 7feets by 14feets if I am not wrong! And there is the ORIGINAL COPY! Due the museum’s rules, I can’t take any pictures about it, you got to go to the museum to see it by yourself to feel and see these great portrait paintings.
The paintings were done by Italian artists in China during the Manchu emperor and during the time while King Kangxi and the rest of the kings building ‘The Forbidden City’ ( From year 1406-1420)
As an artist who do caricature and portraits, that was really great to have a chance to see such great artworks! It had made my day!
