I stay at Ang Mo Kio and I took MRT everyday, so I often met many tourist was taking MRT to Ang Mo Kio MRT Station and wanted to go to the bus interchange to take bus no. 138 to Singapore Zoo.
I realized that many tourist was thinking once arrived Ang Mo Kio MRT station, just go straight out and take bus to Singapore Zoo by bus station just at the left hand side of the exit of Ang Mo Kio MRT Station, that was totally wrong!
The right way to take bus to the Singapore Zoo, is at the bus interchange, which you need to go to the red color building, which is AMK HUB, the bus interchange in inside this red color building. I think most of the tourist first time to Singapore, they never know Singapore having many "Bus Interchange inside the building with aircon"!
You would not find any sign board in the MRT station or any nearby place indicate "This way to Singapore Zoo", I had emailed this ,matter to Singapore Tourism Board and Singapore Zoo, but no news so far, Haahaa! Maybe they think let the tourist explore themselves is much more fun ;p
For tourists, once you arrive Ang Mo Kio MRT station, once you came out from the MRT gate, you need to go by the escalator just at the right hand side, passing by the underpass and take the longest escalator at the other side to go up the bus interchange, which inside AMK HUB, or the red color building you seen from the MRT station. This is Bus number 138 queuing area.Hope my information will help.
